Advisor Role
Background
Volunteer Centre Lewisham is the Volunteering Development Agency (LVDA) for Lewisham. The aim of Volunteer Centre Lewisham is to: advise and support people who want to volunteer; promote volunteering and community involvement; advise and support organisations that involve volunteers.
Volunteer Centre Lewisham has outreach points in the community that are aimed at increasing participation in volunteering by groups currently not accessing the service. These points are run by Volunteer Advisors and are where people come to find out about volunteering opportunities either by making an appointment via the office or as drop-ins.
Role Description
Volunteer Advisors are trained & supported by the Diversity and Outreach worker and the Access Project Assistant. The Volunteer Advisors are supervised by the Diversity and Outreach Worker and carry out the following activities:
- To conduct informal appointments for people looking for volunteering opportunities who have made appointments via the office
- To conduct informal interviews with people looking for volunteering opportunities who are drop-ins (non-appointments)
- To register all new volunteers by completing application and equal opportunities monitoring form
- To match people to volunteer opportunities that match their skills and interests and record the opportunities given to each person
- To attend supervision and support sessions every six weeks and agree to adhere to our volunteer code of conduct
- To complete a recording sheet for all sessions completed and report any issues/ problems that arise
Skills required/Knowledge
- Good communication skills
- Able to use own initiative and remain calm under pressure
- Good written and reading skills
- Reliable, professional with good timekeeping
- Non-judgemental, supportive and respect people of all backgrounds
- An understanding of volunteering/ barriers to volunteering (training given)
- Available for at least 3 hours per week
You will be working as part of a team of volunteers and be partnered with another volunteer at an outreach point. You will also be given the opportunity to attend training and events at the Volunteer Centre Lewisham.
