Capital Volunteering in Lewisham
How it works
Many people with severe and enduring mental health issues have missed out on volunteering opportunities due to stigma, lack of information or lack of support. Since 2005, Capital Volunteering in Lewisham has been using new approaches to overcome this problem. A volunteer support worker is based at the Volunteer Centre Lewisham and a project manager is sited within the mental health services – part of the South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust(SLaM). People are referred from community mental health settings to the volunteer centre for support into voluntary work. To generate more opportunities for people to volunteer in non-mental health settings; a range of support is offered to organizations –
- mental health awareness training
- open mental health learning events
- ‘a phone a friend service’ where organizations are linked with an individual working in a community mental health team.
In Lewisham over 600 hundred people have benefited through Capital Volunteering. People are changing the quality of their lives by volunteering. They tell us they are:
- developing confidence and self esteem
- building new friendships and social relationships
- acquiring new skills and knowledge
- recovering their lives, by continuing to volunteer, as well as accessing education and employment opportunities.
How to get involved
It’s free and easy you can ask your COS Worker, Care Coordinator or GP to refer you. We will then invite you for an informal meeting with your referrer to discuss volunteering and what you are interested in doing. We will discuss the support you might need to get started for example filling in forms, making calls, going for interviews and any help needed when volunteering.
