People have grown in confidence

John volunteers in administration at the Volunteer Centre Lewisham. He explains how things have changed:

'I first came to work in the office of the Volunteer Centre Lewisham 15 months ago. As I have Aspergers Syndrome, working at the Volunteer Centre has provided me not just with valuable work experience but also the opportunity to improve my social skills within a supportive working environment. Working for the Volunteer Centre has helped improve my self confidence and in September 2006 I was ready to begin an Access Course in Social and Cultural Studies at Goldsmith's College and hope to take a full time degree in a related subject. Long term I would like to work in the charity sector. I was both surprised and pleased to be accepted for the Access to Higher Education NIACE award 2007 and would like to thank Isobel Mdudu for nominating me for the award.'

Other quotes from Volunteers:

"Volunteering has given shape to my day. It’s given me a chance to have friends outside my usual circle. I proved I can function in an office environment – I always felt useless and I would screw up. I enjoy what I do and it has made me feel hopeful for the future."

"I have learnt new skills in youth work and I believe the help I give to children is valuable."

"Volunteering has given me a whole fresh new outlook in life. It gives me that get up and go feeling."

"I have come out of the wilderness and come home."

"I am kept active and it is stimulating learning something new. It helps with my portfolio for college."

"My confidence is growing, I’m happy and I really look forward to Wednesday and Friday."

"This is a stepping stone in gaining experience. I am using my carpentry skills and learning about sailing."

"I help out at the charity shop for 1 hour a week at the moment, this is just the start! I feel happy and proud and have made new friends with the older members of staff."
